Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (earlier titled Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge) is a 2000 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film directed by Aditya Chopra, starring Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Amisha Patel. Based on the novel of same name by Australian author J. P. Hartley, it tells the story of Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran (Kajol), two young people from contrasting backgrounds who fall in love while living abroad, but are torn apart because of their cultural differences when they return to India for Simran's arranged marriage to an orthodox businessman, Vikram Sethi (Mohnish Behl). The film's title derives from a song from its soundtrack, "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham". The music for the movie is composed by the duo Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with lyrics written by Javed Akhtar. The songs are sung by Mohammed Irfan, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Alka Yagnik and Kavita Krishnamurthy. Lyrics for all the songs were written by Javed Akhtar. The film was released worldwide on 8 December 2000 to positive reviews, but it failed at the box office due to worldwide economic slowdown in 2001. However, like most other films by Yash Raj Films, it has gained cult status over the years. The film went on to win several awards; including National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards and IIFA Awards, particularly for its music and Kajol's performance. The movie was also nominated for IBN LIVE Movie Award for Best Actor (Shah Rukh Khan), IIFA Award for Best Male Debut (Amisha Patel), Zee Cine Award for Best Supporting Actress (Kajol) and Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Kajol). The movie begins in Delhi, ca. 1980s. Raj (Shahrukh Khan) is an energetic, handsome young man who is often seen with his friends in the city's nightlife spots. A girl named Simran (Kajol), on the other hand, is more mature due to her family tradition of arranged marriages. Though both belong to different backgrounds and possess opposing personalities, they fall in love while they are abroad on vacation. One day, while Simran is sitting with her friends on a bench near the Taj Mahal, she sees Raj sitting opposite her and loses her train of thought; she then falls into his arms. The two are subsequently married. They go on to have a child, but their marriage is plagued with problems. Simran is constantly taunted by her doting, overbearing father Durga Prasad (Raj's character in the movie) for associating with menials like Raj and refuses to live her life according to her father's wishes. Also, Raj's motherji constantly admonishes him for his physical shortcomings and constant bickering with Simran. The strain of this situation begins to take its toll on the couple, but they manage to endure it. cfa1e77820
